The Grid
A 3×3 football knowledge grid. Each cell sits where a row clue meets a column clue — a club, a nation, a trophy or a position — and you need a player who fits both. Rare answers score more.
What is The Grid?
The Grid is a daily-style football knowledge puzzle on a 3×3 board. Each cell is the intersection of a row clue and a column clue — clubs, nations, trophies, positions and similar career facts. You score by naming a real player who satisfies both clues. Rarer answers can score more, so the puzzle rewards both accuracy and football depth.
How to play The Grid
- Read the three row clues and three column clues around the board.
- Pick a cell and name a player who fits both its row and its column.
- A correct answer fills the cell; rarer valid answers score more.
- Fill as many of the nine cells as you can before the round ends.
What counts as a finished game
A game counts when you fill at least 4 of the 9 cells.
Strategy tips
- Start with cells that have only a few obvious answers so you bank points early.
- Leave ultra-rare intersections until last — they are worth chasing but easier to stall on.
- Think in eras: a club clue plus a trophy often points to a specific squad generation.
- Position clues (for example, goalkeeper) cut the search space fast when paired with a nation.
- If two clues feel contradictory, move on; another cell may be simpler.
- Keep notes of multi-club legends — they unlock several intersections across different grids.
Example round
A row clue might be “Premier League winner” and a column clue “France”. Any French player who lifted the Premier League title is valid for that cell. Naming a less obvious winner can outscore the most famous pick if rarity scoring is active for that board.
Frequently asked questions
- How many cells do I need for a counted game?
- At least four of the nine cells.
- Can the same player fill two cells?
- Only if the rules for that board allow it; most rounds expect distinct answers per cell.

- Clubs, nations, trophies, positions and related career facts from our player database.

- The player must match both clues in our database. Spelling and full-name variants matter — try the common search form of the name.
- Is this related to Football Bingo?
- Both test career knowledge, but Bingo places a stream of players onto category tiles, while The Grid asks you to invent answers for fixed intersections.
