MatchDay FOUR

Connect Four meets football trivia. Every square is a country crossed with a club — name a player from that nation who played for that club to drop your disc. Line up four in a row before the CPU or your online opponent does.

What is MatchDay FOUR?

MatchDay FOUR turns the classic Connect Four board into a football career puzzle. Each open square sits at the intersection of a nationality and a club. To drop a disc there you must name a real professional who represented that country and played for that club. You can play against the CPU or another person online. The footballer catalogue is drawn from our synced player database so answers stay grounded in real careers, not guesswork.

How to play MatchDay FOUR

  1. Tap a column — your disc drops to the lowest empty square (Connect Four gravity).
  2. Name a player of that nationality who played for that club.
  3. Make four discs in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
  4. Each player can be used only once in the match.
  5. You have 60 seconds per turn — if the clock runs out, you miss the square.

What counts as a finished game

A match counts toward points when you win or draw.

Strategy tips

  • Prioritise centre columns early — they open more four-in-a-row lines than the edges.
  • Save versatile journeymen (players with many clubs and caps) for awkward intersections late in the game.
  • Block your opponent’s almost-complete lines even if your own answer feels weaker.
  • If a nationality–club pair feels impossible, skip it and force the fight onto squares you know.
  • Against the CPU, build two threats at once so one block cannot stop you.
  • Keep a mental shortlist of South Americans at European clubs — those intersections appear often.

Example round

Suppose a square asks for a Brazilian who played for Chelsea. Naming a valid career fit drops your disc. If three of your discs already sit in that row, that single answer can win the match. A wrong or timed-out name leaves the square open for your opponent.

Frequently asked questions

Is MatchDay FOUR free?
Yes. You can play without paying. Counted finishes earn leaderboard points and tickets toward free prize draws.
Can I reuse the same footballer?
No. Once a player is used in that match, they cannot be named again.
What if I do not know an answer?
Skip or time out rather than burning a wrong guess that helps your opponent. Come back with a better square.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The board is built for phone and desktop browsers.
Is this the same as the party Impostor game?
No. FOUR is a two-player (or CPU) board game. Party Impostor is a group bluffing game with a different ruleset.
Where do player careers come from?
From MatchDay Arcade’s football player database, kept in sync with professional career data sources.
